OVAL GALLERY AT MAAT HOSTS THE SHADOW SOUNDINGS EXHIBITION BY THE ARTIST BILL FONTANA
Shadow Soundings, the new international project for the MAAT Oval Gallery, is an immersive sound and video installation by the American artist Bill Fontana, made from the sounds and vibrations of the 25 de Abril Bridge and the River Tagus. Infraestruturas de Portugal provided the technical support for this installation.
In this installation specially created for Lisbon, the artist captures the soundscape of the bridge and its surrounding areas - so familiar to the inhabitants of the city - and amplifies them, giving them musicality.
Curated by Pedro Gadanho, the exhibition is open from 4 October until 12 February 2018, at the Oval Gallery of MAAT.
In Lisbon, and for the first time, the artist combines a dynamic sound dimension with the video component streamed live.
Through seven projection points, the installation shows unique views of the bridge and the River Tagus, as well as unknown angles of the shadows of moving vehicles on the bridge deck.
As the artist says, it was due to these "shadows in motion that create the ‘singing' sound so characteristic of the bridge" that the title Shadow Soundings appeared.
